The Lucky Strikes are a five-piece, Southend On Sea based rootsy band that blend together a potent mix of bluesy country, rock and cinematic Americana to create a gloriously ragged take on alternative country, full of foot stomping (Stones like) attitude and hook-laden narratives.

The band first formed back in 2006 and since then have released three albums including the critically acclaimed Chronicles Of Solomon Quick (the half fiction account of the man who killed bluesman Robert Johnson) and Gabriel Forgive My 22 Sins (the tale of a boxer’s descent into madness after taking a bribe to throw a fight). The band have also performed a number of high profile slots, up and down the country, supporting the likes of Danny And The Champion Of The World among others. Frontman Matt Boulter has also found time to tour with Simone Felice and release his debut solo album under the Whispering Pines moniker.

Beast Burnt Down is the first taster from the band’s forthcoming fourth full length release and it’s something of a stunning opening gambit. The widescreen tale tells the story of the local Southend Pier burning down, delivered with a flurry of guitars, organs, clattering drums, fiery fiddles and pumping accordian, whilst Matt delivers a typically urgent yet captivating vocal that demands repeat spins.

The band capture their rousing live energy (I was lucky to catch a blistering  live set with the aforementioned Danny….a wee whilst back) on the stirring Beast Burnt Down and if the album manages to continue in such a rich vein we could be in line for a rootsy rock classic.
