Stephen Dale Petit Meets The Late Great Hubert Sumlin
As the guitar world’s greats gather in New York to pay homage to late Blues guitar legend Hubert Sumlin a video clip (attached) has been released of him giving his blessing to UK-based blues guitarist Stephen Dale Petit.
Recording tracks only days before he died for Petit’s forthcoming album, Hubert enthuses “Shit! If people could play like you, I’d just sit back and smile”. Sumlin also invited SDP to play at tonight’s concert at the Apollo Theater, New York.
Petit comments “It was such an honour to meet & play with Hubert. He was a beautiful soul and he played like the angel he’s now truly become. Blues guitar was his life, he was a true innovator and I was blown away to receive such fulsome praise from him – he made me feel like he was passing his blues guitar baton to me. We spent some very special time together; time which I shall remember as long as I live’
Stephen Dale Petit
Stephen Dale Petit is a London based Californian who came to the UK in the 70′s to follow his guitar playing dream. Years of struggle, homelessness and financial troubles have given the blues guitarist a backdrop to his music before finally being recognised by his peers.
Legendary broadcaster Bob Harris pays tribute to UK-based American guitarist on eve of Stephen Dale Petit – The BBC Sessions album release.
Bob said of Stephen - “I am fortunate to have spent time in the company of Stephen Dale Petit. We recorded a conversation and a session together for my weekend show on BBC Radio 2, which confirmed everything good I had heard about him. His playing was uninhibited and passionate; his knowledge of the blues was awesome. I discovered the respect he has for the heritage of the blues and his deep desire to see the music he loves remain relevant and important now and into the future. Stephen Dale Petit is a music man through and through…. A carrier of the torch. He is a magnificent musician and a powerful advocate of blues evolution. Long may he run!” Bob Harris BBC Radio & TV
The BBC Sessions album is out now and was recorded on the Paul Jones Blues Show on Radio 2.
It’s been another high achieving year for Californian Gibson-worshipping anglophile Petit which has included:
- An historic 100 Club-saving campaign and performance saluted by The Times as “an axe maestro and gig worthy of a place in 100 Club folklore”
- A new 2012 album recorded in Martina McBride’s famous Blackbird Studios in Nashville with some of Music City’s best known names and blues heroes performing and recording
- Gibson Guitars launching a Stephen Dale Petit Gibson Signature Model SG (“What a beauty it is!” Guitar & Bass magazine October 2011)
- And now, in response to listener demand, the BBC in collaboration with the 333 Records releases “Stephen Dale Petit – The BBC Sessions”, featuring his live guest appearances on BBC Radio 2’s Paul Jones Rhythm & Blues Show and Bob Harris Show featuring Rolling Stone Mick Taylor as special guest.
- “Stephen Dale Petit – The BBC Sessions” marks a watershed moment in the return of the blues genre to mainstream popular culture.
Rolling Stone, Mick Taylor, who features on the BBC Sessions album says “I had a blast doing the Paul Jones Show with Stephen. I’ve worked with some great players over the years and I can tell you that the future of the blues is in good hands with SDP”.
The album, released Monday 5th December, in a collector’s limited 1000 edition Digipak with 8 page full colour booklet features both new and classic blues and rock material. The album’s cover photograph, specially commissioned from rock muse-turned-celeb photographer Pattie Boyd (who knows a few things about great guitarists), will also be framed and signed by both Pattie and SDP, to form a unique prize for one lucky recipient of a frankly surreal Willy Wonka-style coded album insert.
Petit says: “I’m thrilled that the BBC continue to champion the blues – playlisting it at radio and featuring it on TV. I’m honoured they’ve chosen to release this album.”

The Black Seeds Announce New Album And UK Headline Shows
Reggae-soul heavyweights The Black Seeds return with new studio album and announce UK headline shows
The Black Seeds – ‘Dust and Dirt’ album teaser: http://youtu.be/fLAh-b1tqz4
Reggae-soul heavyweights The Black Seeds return with their highly anticipated new studio album ‘Dust And Dirt’ released worldwide on 16th April on CD, LP and download. By far their most progressive record to date, ‘Dust and Dirt’ incorporates elements of funk, rock and disco while remaining true to the band’s roots.
Self recorded and produced in their own studio, situated in a condemned building in Wellington, New Zealand, the album was honed down over a two year period. The result a 13-track album that the band feels represents their true sound and best work yet. From the get-go, album opener ‘Out of Light’ with it’s shimmering keyboards and trippy vocals showcases a re-invigorated band with a more expansive sound. ‘Loose Cartilage’, inspired in part by an AC/DC concert comes flying out of the traps with a beast of a riff before slipping into a funk-laden Black Seeds groove.
Renowned globally for their epic live shows, (Described by Clash Magazine as ‘one of the best reggae acts on the planet’) The Black Seeds return to the UK for two headline shows at the at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, London on 19th April and The Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh on 20th April.

Introducing…..The Whispering Pines
THE WHISPERING PINES
THE WHISPERING PINES
STOVEPONY RECORDS
(CARGO DISTRIBUTION)
Release date Tuesday 8 May
East London’s Stovepony Records is proud to announce the debut release from The Whispering Pines, the solo alter ego of Matthew Boulter, singer, songwriter and guitarist with Southend-on-Sea’s fast-rising folk and country-rockers The Lucky Strikes. The sharp-eyed among you may have also witnessed Matthew bringing his striking lap-steel skills to live shows by Americana poster-boy Simone Felice and his band The Duke And The King.
A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, Matthew recorded the thirteen songs that make up The Whispering Pines over the course of the past two years between Lucky Strikes duties and lending his talents to myriad sessions for the great and the good of the thriving South Essex music scene. Largely the result of late-night wine-fuelled sessions with his Strikes compadres David Giles and Wild Jim Wilson along with other local luminaries. Fans of his main band will recognise the same elegant acoustic and steel-guitar flourishes, combined with lyrics richly peopled by the characters of the mysterious marshland and industrial wastes of the Thames Delta.
A chance meeting while supporting Simone Felice in 2010, led to Matthew accompanying the upstate New Yorker at the Green Man Festival days later, along with a showcase at London’s prestigious St Pancras Old Church, guesting with The Duke and The King at the Electric Ballroom that Autumn. He’ll be touring with Felice on his Spring dates this year.
Formed in 2007, The Lucky Strikes have three albums available through Stovepony, the most recent being last year’s critically acclaimed Gabriel, Forgive My 22 Sins. Currently readying a fourth album for release later this year, both the band and The Whispering Pines will be playing various gigs and festivals throughout the Summer months.
